Adults and nymphs are present in fields now and should be monitored for population increase on 2nd crop. Potato leafhopper populations can build quickly, particularly as temperatures increase.

Sidedress nitrogen (N) applications on field or sweet corn can improve the effectiveness of fertilizer N by lowering losses that might occur from preplant-applied N through leaching or denitrification. On sandy soils, leaching is the greatest risk of N loss, and sidedress or split sidedress applications can help control these losses.

Mower-Conditioner Wide Swath- Conditioning vs. Not Conditioning

Wide swaths will dry more rapidly than a narrow swath when mower-conditioning forages. Since many mower-conditioners on the North American market are unable to produce wide swaths, the option of not-conditioning and creating a wide swath is an alternative. Some producers are considering not-conditioning by disconnecting or removing the conditioning system on their mower-conditioner.

Microorganism Problems in Diesel Fuel

Bacteria and fungi can grow in diesel systems and cause engines problems such as clogged filters and injectors and corrosion. Water in the fuel is the key fuel contaminant allowing the growth of microorganisms in the fuel.

Nitrogen Guidelines for Corn - Card Available

The UW revised nitrogen (N) fertilizer guidelines for corn now consider corn and nitrogen prices to determine the most profitable N rate. To assist in applying this new approach, the NPM Program has published a pocket card that summarizes the new guidelines.

Speak of soybean rust and you’ll have the attention of most Wisconsin farmers. Despite early indications that soybean rust will not be as destructive in Wisconsin as it is in other countries, the 2005 growing season saw many fields sprayed with a fungicide to prevent soybean rust.
