2007 Wisconsin Agronomy Update Meetings, brochure

The Department of Agronomy will offer Crop Production and Management Meetings at eight locations during 2007. Joe Lauer, John Gaska and Dan Undersander will present the latest information on hybrid/variety performance, an analysis and discussion of last year's growing season, and updated recommendations for field crop production. There is a $12.00 registration fee per participant; meal cost is extra. Please pre-register with the Host Agent. Certified Crop Advisor CEU credits have been requested (2.5 hours in Crop Management).

Avitec™ Approved for 2007: Corn Seed Treatment for Sandhill Cranes

A Section 18 label has been issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and WI DATCP for Avitec™, a seed protectant of field and sweet corn against consumption by cranes. In 2007, Avitec can be used as a corn seed treatment in Wisconsin in areas where Sandhill Cranes have been damaging corn fields by eating corn seeds and seedlings shortly after planting.

Western Bean Cutworm – An Upcoming Distance Education Course - 2/28/07

This short course, intended for clientele in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, will focus on the western bean cutworm, an insect pest whose range has expanded very rapidly from western Iowa to eastern Ohio (2000 to 2006). Extension entomologists from the University of Illinois, Iowa State University, and the University of Wisconsin will present the program.

IPM research in organic crop production underway

This fall, UWEX Field Crops Entomologist, Eileen Cullen and NPM outreach educator, Kevin Shelley, were awarded a grant to conduct a participatory research and educational outreach project pertaining to insect management in organic field crop production. The four-year grant is one of 10 funded nationally this year under the USDA’s Integrated Organic Program.

Wisconsin Certified Soil Testing Laboratories, Nov 2006

Logan Labs of Russell Point, OH has withdrawn from the Wisconsin certification program. Therefore, as of November 2006, there are now seven laboratories certified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection for soil testing in Wisconsin. Here is the list.
