Pest Management Update Meeting Packets Available

We just finished the 2007 Pest Management Update meetings last week. If harvest, soil sampling, or other field operations kept you from attending one of these meetings, we have a limited number of packets of the materials from the meetings, which can be ordered.

Giant Ragweed Competition for Nitrogen in Corn

A recent research article by Purdue weed scientists highlights the damage that giant ragweed can cause in corn. Obviously, these tall weeds are going to be highly competitive for light and they are also going to compete for water. However, this new study also documents their competition for nitrogen.

Manage traffic on wet soils to limit soil compaction

Soils are at or near their field capacity water content, which is the point were maximum compaction is possible. The easy, armchair quarterback advice is to stay off these wet soils, but in reality that may not happen. So how much compaction really may occur when heavy equipment is driven on wet soils?

The CCA Pre-Test Training Session, sponsored by UW-Extension, Wisconsin Fertilizer and Chemical Association and the IPM Program will be offered at the Crowne Plaza, Madison on December 13-14, 2007. This training session is designed to help participants understand the principles necessary to become a quality crop advisor and to assist in preparation for the state CCA exam.

Revised Soil Testing Basics Publication Now Available

The popular publication Soil Testing Basics has recently been revised by the Nutrient and Pest Management (NPM) Program. Soil Testing Basics is a useful one-page reference resource for individuals involved in nutrient management planning. This publication includes information on why, when, and how to collect soil samples, as well as information on how to complete the soil information sheet that should accompany any samples sent to a lab.

Soil Science offers Soil, Water, and Nutrient Management Meetings at eight locations

The Department of Soil Science will offer Soil, Water, and Nutrient Management Meetings at eightlocations in 2007. These meetings now combine the former Soil & Water Management and Fertilizer Dealer Meetings into one 4-hour sessions. A link for the PDF flyer is in this article.

Fall Alfalfa Removal Using Herbicides

Alfalfa is a key crop in many rotations within Wisconsin, but if not successfully removed it can be troublesome in subsequent crops. This is especially true in no-till systems. This experiment was conducted on Roundup Ready alfalfa, as concern exists in the ability to remove this crop without the use of glyphosate as this is the most common herbicide used to remove alfalfa.

Request for Yield Information from Corn Treated with Foliar Fungicides

A number of Wisconsin corn acres were treated with foliar fungicides this summer. We would be very interested in any yield information that you would be willing to share from those fields which had at least two replicates of treated and untreated strips.

New Version of Snap-Plus software is Available

A new version of the Snap-Plus nutrient management planning software for cropland and grazing land in Wisconsin is available. Snap-Plus is easily downloaded from the web site http://www.snapplus.net. This software facilitates planning manure and fertilizer applications to meet crop production goals while following state guidelines for water quality protection.

As growers proceed in harvest a quick in-field estimate can be preformed to assess where yield losses are occurring. Remember 40 seeds per 10 square ft equal ~1 bushel per acre yield loss.
