Soybean aphid populations have not yet “crashed”. As of the week of August 18th, soybean aphid populations have continued to flourish and increase beyond threshold in some areas of Wisconsin.

Last week we received two unknown weed samples for identification, one from a homeowner, the other from a field in southwest Wisconsin. The homeowner version was common hops, a native species or non-native variety of this species used for hop production for beer (Humulus lupulus). The other species in the agricultural field was Japanese hops (Humulus japonicus) a new non native invasive plant spreading in Wisconsin.

Based on various reports from around the state in 2008, probably the number one disease of corn that has been noted and mentioned has been common rust, caused by Puccinia sorghi. Given the differences in the reports, the goal of this article is provide a method to help in estimating the severity of common rust on the leaf surface.
