This could be one of those years when it pays to scout corn fields for silk clipping caused by Western and Northern corn rootworm beetles. Both species are attracted to pollinating fields and are capable of clipping silks prior to fertilization resulting in poor ear fill. The concern this year would be over variable planting dates.

Weather extremes can place enormous pressure on growers and applicators to use pesticides in manners that violate label directions. This year’s weather has certainly been a case in point. With the flooding in Wisconsin, many questions have been asked about the potential to replant different crops after herbicides had been applied to corn or other crops.

Foliar Fungicides for Corn and Soybean – Don’t Rush to Spray |

We have started to receive questions and initial reports regarding the need to spray foliar fungicides in corn and soybean. Many of these questions have been received in part because of initial observations of lesions on both plants. Actively scouting fields is an important step in the decision making process about whether or not a foliar fungicide is needed.

Scab Incidence and Severity Relatively Low Across the State |

A recent survey of our winter wheat variety trials found Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) or Head Scab at all four of our variety testing locations: Janesville, Arlington, Lancaster, and Chilton. At these locations, both incidence and severity are relatively low. At our most uniform and prevalent FHB site (Lancaster) our ratings show an FHB index range from 0.6 to 8.8 among the varieties.

Yesterday at the UW Pest Management Field Day, the benefits of preemergence herbicides in managing early-season weed competition and herbicide application timing in soybean were clearly visible. In two field trials, we had applied an array of preemergence broadleaf herbicides, which will be followed by postemergence applications of glyphosate. The intent of these preemergence herbicides was to provide initial suppression of broadleaf weeds so that glyphosate applications could be delayed.
