Foliar Fungicides for Corn and Soybean – Don’t Rush to Spray |
|

We have started to receive questions and initial reports regarding the need to spray foliar fungicides in corn and soybean. Many of these questions have been received in part because of initial observations of lesions on both plants. Actively scouting fields is an important step in the decision making process about whether or not a foliar fungicide is needed.

A recent survey of our winter wheat variety trials found Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) or Head Scab at all four of our variety testing locations: Janesville, Arlington, Lancaster, and Chilton. At these locations, both incidence and severity are relatively low. At our most uniform and prevalent FHB site (Lancaster) our ratings show an FHB index range from 0.6 to 8.8 among the varieties.

Wheat head scab (synonym, wheat head blight), caused by several species of Fusarium, but in the U.S., mainly Fusarium graminearum, was noted in a routine survey of the winter wheat variety trials during the week of June 16th (Figure 1). This was not an unexpected discovery given the recent weather conditions during the flowering period.

Winter wheat is at or near to the flag leaf (Feekes 8) growth stage throughout the state. This is an important time to actively scout wheat fields to most effectively determine if the use of a foliar fungicide will be needed.

Recently, we received an email asking about the risk for soybean rust in Wisconsin in 2008, especially since growers are considering altering planting plans with the wet conditions found in parts of the state. In examining the situation in the southern U.S., the current risk of soybean rust in Wisconsin is low.

Recently, EPA approved a master Section 3 label (as of 03/24/2008) for ProlineÔ Fungicide from Bayer Crop Science for use in soybean against soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) and powdery mildew (Microsphaera diffusa). To legally use ProlineÔon soybean, growers will need to have in their possession the existing container label as well as the supplemental label that Bayer Crop Science is allowed to market.

Soybean Disease Diagnosis at Emergence and Seedling Growth Stages |

The 2007-2008 winter, and the early portions of the spring season, has brought substantial moisture into many parts of the state. With further rain forecasted throughout the state over the next few days and weeks, it is important to understand how early season soybean development may be compromised by several plant pathogenic fungi that cause seed rot, seedling mortality, and root and stem decay.
