The Department of Agronomy will offer Crop Production and Management Meetings at eight locations during 2007. Joe Lauer, John Gaska and Dan Undersander will present the latest information on hybrid/variety performance, an analysis and discussion of last year's growing season, and updated recommendations for field crop production. There is a $12.00 registration fee per participant; meal cost is extra. Please pre-register with the Host Agent. Certified Crop Advisor CEU credits have been requested (2.5 hours in Crop Management).

This fall, UWEX Field Crops Entomologist, Eileen Cullen and NPM outreach educator, Kevin Shelley, were awarded a grant to conduct a participatory research and educational outreach project pertaining to insect management in organic field crop production. The four-year grant is one of 10 funded nationally this year under the USDA’s Integrated Organic Program.

The annual FVTC Field Scout Training School will be held January 2-5, 2007. This course is designed to provide the skills necessary for proper pest identification and crop scouting techniques. In addition, basic information such as crop growth and development, pest life cycle, damage symptoms and economic thresholds will be covered.

The CCA Pre-Test Training Session, sponsored by UW-Extension, Wisconsin Fertilizer and Chemical Association and the IPM Program will be offered at the Crowne Plaza, Madison on December 14-15, 2006. This training session is designed to help participants understand the principles necessary to become a quality crop advisor and to assist in preparation for the state CCA exam.

Dairymen and corn farmers need to understand the grain equivalent relationship when acres are contracted for silage production. This relationship is dynamic and, as we are learning, quite variable to the extent that one predetermined value should probably not be used in contracts.
