The Biggest Weed Contest had several interesting, tall, and large weeds entered last week at the Weed Doctor Booth at Farm Technology Days. Entries included weeds like sweet clover, poison hemlock, and giant ragweed.

I received the first call of the season about potential spray tank contamination, which is not surprising considering the major role postemergence herbicides play in many corn and soybean weed management programs. With these postemergence herbicides, remember to take extra time and care to clean your sprayers.

I have just received the first two bulletins on the biology and management of horseweed and wild buckwheat.

The recent warm weather and rain is bringing a good crop of winter annual weeds to life and early summer annual weeds will be right behind. In no-till fields, it is important to apply an effective burndown treatment to control these weeds at planting, even if the crop being planted is Roundup Ready.
