That's sick! Articles concerning plant pathology in Wisconsin field crops.

Winter wheat is at or near to the flag leaf (Feekes 8) growth stage throughout the state. This is an important time to actively scout wheat fields to most effectively determine if the use of a foliar fungicide will be needed.

Recently, we received an email asking about the risk for soybean rust in Wisconsin in 2008, especially since growers are considering altering planting plans with the wet conditions found in parts of the state. In examining the situation in the southern U.S., the current risk of soybean rust in Wisconsin is low.

One major question that has been raised is whether foliar fungicides will help improve wheat yield in Wisconsin. Current knowledge and information from the U.S. winter wheat regions would suggest that “yes” foliar fungicides could be beneficial. However, in order to most effectively consider the use of a foliar fungicide requires knowledge of your entire production system.

When considering the application of a foliar fungicide to wheat, it is critical that proper identification of the foliar diseases takes place. Proper identification is important for noting which diseases are present, as well as what the level of severity is, as different disease thresholds exist for applying a foliar fungicide. Furthermore, not all wheat diseases, especially viruses and Take-All, will be affected with foliar fungicide applications.

Multiple positive soybean stem canker samples have been received by the Plant Disease and Diagnostic Clinic and based on the location of positive detections, it appears that the majority of soybean stem canker samples formed a “U-shaped” pattern from the northwestern part of the state down to the south, before arcing back northwards towards Outagamie, Brown, and Kewaunee Counties.
