Wheat head scab (synonym, wheat head blight), caused by several species of Fusarium, but in the U.S., mainly Fusarium graminearum, was noted in a routine survey of the winter wheat variety trials during the week of June 16th (Figure 1). This was not an unexpected discovery given the recent weather conditions during the flowering period.

Recently, EPA has approved a federal registration for FolicurÒ, tebuconazole, from Bayer CropScience LP. FolicurÒ has been approved for wheat and barley, specifically for control of Fusarium head blight (Fusarium head scab) and also rusts diseases including leaf, stripe, and stem rusts.

Winter wheat is at or near to the flag leaf (Feekes 8) growth stage throughout the state. This is an important time to actively scout wheat fields to most effectively determine if the use of a foliar fungicide will be needed.

Recently, we received an email asking about the risk for soybean rust in Wisconsin in 2008, especially since growers are considering altering planting plans with the wet conditions found in parts of the state. In examining the situation in the southern U.S., the current risk of soybean rust in Wisconsin is low.

Recently, EPA approved a master Section 3 label (as of 03/24/2008) for ProlineÔ Fungicide from Bayer Crop Science for use in soybean against soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) and powdery mildew (Microsphaera diffusa). To legally use ProlineÔon soybean, growers will need to have in their possession the existing container label as well as the supplemental label that Bayer Crop Science is allowed to market.

The 2007-2008 winter, and the early portions of the spring season, has brought substantial moisture into many parts of the state. With further rain forecasted throughout the state over the next few days and weeks, it is important to understand how early season soybean development may be compromised by several plant pathogenic fungi that cause seed rot, seedling mortality, and root and stem decay.
