Weed #1 – wild four o’clock is a perennial. Note the large taproot and opposite dark green leaves that are lilac shaped. Wild four o’clock can be controlled with plowing or with glyphosate applications in the bud stage. In non-Roundup Ready corn, dicamba can be used for suppression.

Weed #2 - purslane speedwell is a winter annual or annual that is found in no-till or even in some fields that are tilled late. It’s often only 6 or 8 inches tall. It is easy to identify after it flowers and produces the small swollen heart-shaped seed pods in the leaf axils. Other speedwell species are often found in lawns and also have similarly shaped seed pods.

Weed #3 – field horsetail is a perennial that is more frequent in no-till and moist soils. Field horsetail is often described as looking like a Christmas tree. It is easy to confuse the name with horseweed or marestail, the winter annual weed. Control options are limited. Tillage will suppress horsetail. In no-till, glyphosate and 2,4-D burndown treatments are not very effective. Peter Sikkema, a weed scientist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, reports good control with applications of flumetsulam (Python) in burndown applications.
