Acetochlor Formulations Labeled on Sweet Corn

Chris Boerboom, Extension Weed Scientist

Dow received EPA approval for the preplant, preplant incorporated, and preemergence use of acetochlor (Surpass and TopNotch) and the atrazine premixtures (FulTime, Keystone LA, and Keystone) on sweet corn (supplemental labels on cdms.net). While these labels are too late for most of the 2007 use season, you may consider these herbicides for next year. Acetochlor provides annual grass control plus control of several annual broadleaf weeds. The use of these products may be limited on sweet corn in the central sands because of acetochlor use restrictions to protect groundwater. Remember that acetochlor cannot be used on sands with less than 3% organic matter, on loamy sands with less than 2% organic matter, or on sandy loams with less than 1% organic matter when the depth to groundwater is less than 30 feet.
