New publication, Planting Winter Rye after Corn
Kevin B. Shelley, Outreach Educator, UW-NPM
A new publication entitled Planting Winter Rye After Corn Silage-Managing for Forage is available from the University of Wisconsin Extension Nutrient and Pest Management Program. This four-page publication covers potential soil conservation and nutrient management benefits associated with planting winter cereal rye following harvest of corn silage. Managing the over-winter cover crop for harvest of early season forage the following spring is emphasized. Information is provided on rye yield and forage quality associated with planting date, seeding rate, variety, soil fertility and manure application, harvest management and other agronomic factors to consider. Choices for the following crop are also discussed.
The information provided is primarily based on research conducted from 2002 to 2006 at University of Wisconsin research stations at Arlington and Lancaster and the Rock County Farm at Janesville. The publication is available for download at the UW IPCM’s website at http://ipcm.wisc.edu . Click on the Publications menu item and type rye in the search box for the resource files. Then click on Download. Or, call 1-800-994-5853. Copies will also be available in the nutrient management area of the Applied Technology tent at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days September 18-20, 2007 in Albany, WI. |
