2005 Bean Pod Mottle Virus Survey Results
Eileen Cullen, Extension Entomologist UW Entomology Department
In spring overwintered bean leaf beetles become active in cultivated (alfalfa) and wild (showy tick trefoil) legumes before soybeans are available. As soybean cotyledons, unifoliate, and first trifoliate leaves emerge, overwintered adults move to soybeans to continue feeding and lay eggs in the soil. Early planted soybeans are at greater risk of bean leaf beetle feeding and bean pod mottle virus transmission because 1) plant emergence intersects with peak overwintered bean leaf beetle activity (adults on the move from other legumes), and 2) soybeans are most susceptible to bean pod mottle virus (BPMV), transmitted by bean leaf beetle, duringthe seedling growth stages.
Each summer, the WI DATCP surveys Wisconsin soybeans and bean leaf beetles for BPMV to assess virus incidence and potential for BPMV carry-over the next year. The 2005 WI DATCP summer collection of bean leaf beetles, conducted between June 28 and August 22, found bean leaf beetles at 47 of 276 soybean fields. Individual beetles were tested for BPMV, and no summer bean leaf beetles tested positive for BPMV. In addition, soybean leaflets from each of the 276 fields were tested for BPMV. No BPMV was found in any of the 276 soybean fields sampled. These survey findings suggest that early-season BPMV transmission by overwintered bean leaf beetles should not be a major issue in Wisconsin in 2006. Distribution maps of the WI DATCP BPMV survey results can be found at: http://pestbulletin.wi.gov/pests.jsp?issueid=54&articleid =295.
While BPMV incidence has subsided in Wisconsin over the last two years, bean leaf beetle is still present and should be on the early season insect pest scouting schedule, particularly in southern Wisconsin. A very good article on the importance of early-season decisions that should be considered for managing the bean leaf beetle-BPMV complex in soybeans is available from the Iowa State University Integrated Crop Management newsletter at: http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/icm/2005/5-2-2005/integrated.html The article presents two management plans: one for managing both the beetle and the virus, or one for managing only the beetle.
• The University of Wisconsin Bean Leaf Beetle-BPMV site is available at: http://www.plantpath.wisc.edu/soyhealth/virus complex/blb.htm
•The North Central Soybean Research Program maintains a soybean Plant Health Initiative website with a section on bean leaf beetle and management: http://www.planthealth.info/blb_basics.htm
•Early-season bean leaf beetle economic thresholds in soybeans are explained in the ISU article above, and in UWEX Publication A3646 Pest Management in Wisconsin Field Crops 2006. This UWEX publication (pp. 114-124) also provides information on foliar insecticides registered for adult control, if early season defoliation thresholds are reached, as well as soybean seed treatments available for early season protection when overwintered bean leaf beetles are active (systemic nicotinoid insecticides) http://s142412519.onlinehome.us/uw/pdfs/A36 46.PDF |
