EPA issued final orders in 2006 cancelling the registrations of all products containing the pesticide lindane, including those products used as a seed treatment on grain. Although end-use products containing lindane no longer can enter the channels of trade, end users (i.e., co-ops, applicators, etc.) have until October 1, 2009 to use existing products already in the channels of trade.

Seed Treatments Containing Lindane: Time is Running Out!

Roger Flashinski, Pesticide Applicator Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison

The manufacturers of lindane have requested from EPA to voluntarily cancel all uses of lindane. As a result, EPA issued final orders in 2006 cancelling the registrations of all products containing the pesticide lindane, including those products used as a seed treatment on grain. Although end-use products containing lindane no longer can enter the channels of trade, end users (i.e., co-ops, applicators, etc.) have until October 1, 2009 to use existing products already in the channels of trade. After this date, lindane products no longer can be legally used by anyone.

Lindane is a restricted-use pesticide so applicators of lindane must be certified (a private applicator in General Farming, and a commercial applicator in Field & Vegetable Crops). If the product is intended as a planter-box treatment, the applicator may make such applications at planting time under the appropriate certification categories just mentioned. However, if commercially treating seed with lindane prior to seed distribution or planting, that person would need to get certified in the Seed Treatment category.

One final note about treated seed in general: if you purchase seed that is already treated, even seed treated with a restricted-use pesticideTraining  such as lindane, the seed is considered a treated article and you are not legally required to be certified or licensed to purchase or plant such seed.
