Cadet and Authority Assist Herbicides

Chris Boerboom, Extension Weed Scientist

Cadet is a new postemergence broadleaf herbicide for use in corn and soybeans from FMC. It contains the active ingredient fluthiacet-methyl, which is a PPO-inhibiting herbicide (Group 14). Cadet can be used on field corn, seed corn, sweet corn and popcorn from V2 until 48 inches tall or before tasseling, whichever occurs first. The preharvest interval in sweet corn is 40 days. In soybeans, it can be used from first trifoliate to full flowering. Cadet rates are 0.4 fl oz/a in tank mixtures with glyphosate, 0.5 fl oz/a with other broadleaf herbicides, and 0.6 or 0.9 fl oz/a if applied alone. Cadet has excellent activity on velvetleaf and controls plants up to 36 inches tall at 0.6 fl oz/a or at lower rates in tank mixtures. Cadet has similar velvetleaf activity to Aim and Resource. At the 0.9 fl oz/a rate, it is labeled to control 2-inch tall lambsquarters, waterhemp, and jimsonweed and 4-inch tall pigweed, but these weeds are only listed as suppressed at lower rates. Cadet needs surfactant or crop oil plus a nitrogen additive if applied alone, but tank mixtures with a fully loaded glyphosate formulation should only need the ammonium sulfate that is typically used with glyphosate. Cadet has contact activity (does not translocate) and basically has no residual activity. We evaluated this herbicide as an experimental herbicide about 10 years ago.  It is an option when targeting velvetleaf alone or in tank mixtures with other broadleaf herbicides.

Authority Assist is a premix for preemergence broadleaf weed control in soybean. The ingredients are sulfentrazone (Spartan) and imazethapyr (Pursuit). Authority Assist has rate recommendations at full rates of 6 to 12 fl oz/a depending on soil type and organic matter and at reduced rates of 4 to 6 fl oz/a. The reduced rates are intended as a foundation treatment to suppress early-season weeds before a glyphosate application in Roundup Ready soybeans. The 6 fl oz/a rate provides the equivalent of 6 fl oz/a Spartan and 2 fl oz/a Pursuit. With this premix, control or suppression of lambsquarters, nightshade, pigweed, smartweed, velvetleaf, and waterhemp should be expected along with suppression of foxtails. Common and giant ragweed are weeds that may not be suppressed well. Authority Assist can be applied preplant or preemergence after planting, but it needs to be applied within 3 days after planting. It should not be used on soils classified as sands with less than 1% organic matter. Because Authority Assist contains imazethapyr, certain rotational crops are limited. Rotational intervals include wheat at 4 months, barley and tobacco at 9.5 months; field corn, peas, and snap beans at 10 months; alfalfa at 12 months; oats and sweet corn at 18 months; and potatoes at 26 months.
