Nutrient Management Farmer Education Curriculum Updated

By the NPM program

A revised version of this popular teaching tool was released in October 2006. The Nutrient Management Farmer Education Curriculum has been improved based on feedback from those who taught it previously. The 2006 CD edition contains multiple PowerPoint presentations (rather than only two as in previous versions) arranged in core and optional modules as follows:

Core Modules:

  • Introduction to Nutrient Management Planning
  • Nitrogen Management (Advanced or Basic versions)
  • Phosphorus, Potassium & pH Management (Advanced or Basic versions)
  • Manure Management

Optional Modules:

  • Nutrient Management Planning in Wis.: Rules, Regulations, and the 590 Standard
  • Dietary Phosphorus and Nitrogen Management
  • Karst and Tile Line Concerns
  • Nutrient Management for Grazers
  • Producer-Consultant Relationships

Also included on the CD are speaker notes, associated publications and worksheets, a suggested program evaluation procedure, and a pdf version of the user’s manual.

Paul Kivlin (NPM), Dennis Frame (Discovery Farms), and Scott Sturgul (NPM) led the revision efforts, garnering ideas and materials from the UWEX Nutrient Management Team, especially Eric Cooley (Discovery Farms), Nancy Drummy (Discovery Farms), Don Genrich (Adams County UWEX), Matt Hanson (Dodge UWEX), Kevan Klingberg (Discovery Farms), and Nick Schneider (Clark UWEX). Contact Sturgul for copies or more information (ssturgul@wisc.edu or 608-262-7486).

Related to this project, three Train the Trainer workshops will be held. The workshop purpose is to provide an overview of the new materials and talk about how to help producers develop a plan that can be implemented and that meets the state standards.  Examples plans (both official and 590-EZ) will be discussed and reviewed. County-based UWEX agents, technical college instructors, LCD, NRCS staff and any others that may be using the curriculum are invited to attend.  Sessions will be:

  • Nov 28, Fox Valley Technical College, Appleton
  • Dec 14, Marshfield Agricultural Research Station
  • Dec 15, Arlington Agricultural Research Station

Contact Judy Goplin at 715-983-5668 or jgoplin@wisc.edu to register for a workshop.
