Label updates on the herbicides Breakfree, Caonopy EX, and Express

Breakfree, Canopy EX, and Express Label Updates

Chris Boerboom, Ext. Weed Scientist

Breakfree is the trade name for the version of acetochlor that DuPont is marketing in corn.  Breakfree contains 6.4 lb/gal of acetochlor which is the same concentration as found in Surpass. Atrazine is premixed with acetochlor in the formulations of Breakfree ATZ (3 lb/gal acetochlor + 2.25 lb/gal atrazine) and Breakfree ATZ Lite (4 lb/gal acetochlor + 1.5 lb/gal atrazine).  These are the same ratios of acetochlor to atrazine as found in Keystone and Keystone LA.

Changes to Canopy EX labeling now allow applications in the spring for burndown applications.  A supplemental label allows applications 7 to 14 days before planting soybeans.  The original label restricted applications to 45 days before planting soybeans, which limited Canopy EX applications to the fall.  Canopy EX can only be used at the 1.1 oz/a rate in Wisconsin and only south of I-94 west of Madison and south of I-90 east of Madison

The labeling for Express has also changed with a supplemental label that allows applications of 0.25 to 0.5 oz/a of Express in spring burndown treatments at 14 days or more before corn or soybean planting.  Express was also previously limited to fall applications because of the original 45 day interval required between application and planting corn or soybeans.
