Although there isn't much data on grazing soybeans, beans can be high in quality and provide good grazing. Recommendations are listed.
Grazing Soybeans
Dan Undersander, Extension Forage Agronomist
The late planting season, cool summer and, in some cases, early frost have combined to cause many to consider harvesting soybeans for forage. It makes good hay and silage. Some have asked about grazing soybeans. There is very little data on this. As can be seen from the table below, soybeans can be high in quality. The grazing experience that exists suggests that soybeans can provide good grazing. Apparently bloat, while a concern, is less of a problem than for alfalfa or clovers.
Our recommendations would be as follows:
- Graze when soybean fields are in the green pod stage (R4 to R5). Forage quality is high and as soybean matures further leaves fall off and the pods begin to fill which can shatter.
- Strip graze soybean fields. This will ensure a high percentage of utilization.
- In addition, the cattle should have access to some other forage, either another grass pasture or hay or silage because the soybeans by themselves may be too rich for most categories of animals.
- Soybean white mold is not known to have any affect on cattle.
