Orion: Another New Wheat Herbicide

Chris Boerboom, Extension Weed Scientist

In addition to the wheat herbicides reviewed in the last issue, Orion (Syngenta) has recently received its registration. Orion is a postemergence broadleaf herbicide for wheat, barley and oats and contains the ingredients florasulam and MCPA. Florasulam is a new active ingredient in the ALS inhibitor group. At the use rate of 17 oz/a, Orion provides 0.004 lb ai/a florasulam plus 10 oz/a MCPA (of a 4 lb/gal formulation). Orion is labeled to control many mustards (shepherds purse, pennycress, wild mustard, etc), lambsquarters, pigweed, common ragweed, wild buckwheat, and smartweeds. It should be applied from the 3-leaf stage until jointing for greatest crop safety. Applications can be made up to the boot stage, but the risk of injury increases after jointing because of the MCPA component. Orion does not need an adjuvant. Orion has few rotational restrictions. Small grains can be planted 0.5 months after an application; all corn types can be planted after 3 months; and all other crops can be planted after either 9 or 12 months.
