Resistant
Foxtail Note
Chris
Boerboom
We have received a report about a
new location of a potentially ALS-inhibitor resistant giant
foxtail. This is in addition to other confirmed reports of ALS
resistant giant and green foxtail in Wisconsin that we announced
last year. I wanted to mention this for two reasons. First, this
ALS resistance was selected with about 6 years of continuous ALS
herbicide use (if resistance is confirmed). This should serve as
a warning for those using the same herbicide program year after
year, especially ALS herbicides. Second, if you encounter poor
control, consider resistance as a possible cause. The biggest
clue in this regard is if only one weed species has escaped
control. This means that the herbicide was applied correctly
since the other weeds were controlled. Unfortunately, herbicide
resistance will continue to occur. I just hope that we can delay
the rate that it develops.
