Mode of Action: membrane disruption

Paraquat accepts electrons from the photosystem I pathway, forming free radicals which rapidly destroy cell membranes.  The loss of cell membranes allows cytoplasm to leak into intercellular spaces (water-soaked lesions), leading to rapid wilting and desiccation.
Paraquat is most effective when the plant is undergoing active photosynthesis.  Injury symptoms may be delayed under cloudy conditions.
