Consider these herbicide modes of action:

Root growth is inhibited with the root tips having a clubbed appearance. Grasses are more sensitive than broadleaves.

Plants have pruned roots. The lateral roots are short and slender giving a bottle-brush appearance. Broadleaf weeds are often more sensitive that grasses.

Seedling roots are short and thickened with root proliferation. Broadleaves are more sensitive than grasses.
