Each year,
graduate and undergraduate students from universities in 16
midwestern states and four Canadian Providences have the
opportunity to compete in the North Central Collegiate Weed
Science Contest. Participants compete as individuals or part of
a team in five phases; the identification of weed seedlings or
weed seeds, unknown herbicides where contestants use injury
symptoms and uncontrolled weed or crop species to determine the
herbicide used, farmer problems where contestants role play as a
crop consultant to determine the source of injury in a field, a
written math component geared towards insuring the proper
calibration of a sprayer and application of herbicides, and
finally team sprayer calibration where the four team members
work together to properly calibrate a CO2 backpack sprayer in
under 10 minutes. The contest is held in late July each year at
the host organization's facilities.
